Question

How do I install Microsoft SQL Server Express 2012 to use alongside PostgreSQL for the FTK Web Viewer?

 

Prerequisites

  • A service account under which the FTK Web Viewer components will run
  • The “ENU\x64\SQLEXPRADV_x64_ENU.exe” installation package from Microsoft.

 

Answer

  1. Log into Windows using your “service” account.
  2. Run the downloaded “SQLEXPRADV_x64_ENU.exe” from the “Obtaining the Software” section.
  3. On the Installation tab of the “SQL Server Installation Center”, click New SQL Server stand-alone installation or add features to an existing installation.
  4. If necessary, correct any problems encountered by the Setup Support Rules
  5. When prompted, accept the License Terms and click Next.
  6. At Product Updates check “Include SQL Server product updates” and click Next.
  7. If necessary, correct any problems encountered by the Setup Support Rules.
  8. From the Feature Selection page, select the following features and click Next:
    • Database Engine Services
      • Full-Text and Semantic Extractions for Search
    • Management Tools- Basic
  9. If necessary, correct any problems encountered by the Installation Rules.
  10. On the Instance Configuration page, do the following and click Next:
    • Choose either Default instance or Named instance
      Note: If you choose Named instance, you must remember the name you specify.
    • If desired, change the Instance Root Directory
  11. If necessary, correct any problems encountered by the Disk Space Requirements.
  12. On the Server Configuration page, under the Collation tab, set the Database Engine to SQL_Latin1_General_CP1_CI_AS and click Next.
  13. On the Database Engine Configuration page, do the following and click Next:
    • Under the Server Configuration tab:
      • Choose the Mixed Mode Authentication Mode
      • Specify a password for the SQL Server system administrator (sa) account
  14. Click Add Current User
  15. Under the Data Directories tab:
    1. Confirm the paths are pointing to the desired locations
  16. On the Error Reporting page, choose whether you want to send out error reports and click Next.
  17. If necessary, correct any problems encountered by the Installation Configuration Rules.
  18. Allow the installation to complete.
  19. Open the SQL Server Configuration Manager.
  20. Expand SQL Server Network Configuration.
  21. Select the proper SQL Instance.
  22. Under Protocol Names, if TCP/IP and Named Pipes are not listed as “Enabled”:
    • Right-click TCP/IP and click Enable
    • Right-click Named Pipes and click Enable
    • Stop and restart the SQL Server service

 

Notes

  • 32-bit versions are not supported
  • SQL Server Express is only used to house the "eDiscovery" databases, while PostgreSQL is used to house the cases
