Question

What's the difference between Archive, Archive and Detach, and Backup?

Answer

  • Archive: Backs the database data up into the existing case directory (think of it as a restore point).

  • Backup: Database data and case folder are backed up to a new location (think disaster recovery).

  • Archive and Detach: Backs the database data up into the existing case directory and then deletes the case from FTK (This method is not recommended for most use cases, because if the archive process fails, the case could still get deleted).

If I wish to export the case to another machine, do both archive and backup work the same way, or must I use archive to properly prep the case folders for export first?
