Problem

How do I install MS SQL Server 2008 R2 in preparation for AD software install?

 

Resolution

  1. Run the SQL Server Installation Setup executable and wait for the SQL Server Installation Center window to appear.
  2. Choose the Installation option and click New installation or add features to an existing installation.
  3. A Setup Support Rules page will appear. Ensure the Setup Support Rules all report either “Passed” or “Skipped” and click OK.
  4. Enter your product key and click Next.
  5. Accept the License Terms, and click Next.
  6. Click Install and wait for the Setup Support Files to install.
  7. A Setup Support Rules page will appear. Ensure the Setup Support Rules all report either “Passed” or “Skipped” and click Next.
  8. Select the SQL Server Feature Installation option and click Next.
  9. Select the Database Engine Services, Management Tools – Basic, and Management Tools – Complete features and click Next. (NOTE: YOU CAN ALSO MODIFY THE SHARED FEATURE DIRECTORIES, IF DESIRED.)
  10. The Installation Rules page will appear. Ensure the Installation rules all report either “Passed” or “Not applicable” and click Next.
  11. Select Default Instance and click Next. (NOTE: YOU CAN CREATE A NAMED INSTANCE OR MODIFY THE INSTANCE ROOT DIRECTORY, IF DESIRED.)
  12. The Disk Space Requirements page will appear. Ensure there is sufficient disk space available for the features and click Next.
  13. Enter the credentials of the account(s) that that will run the SQL Server Agent and SQL Server Database Engine and click the Collation tab. If you don’t know the credentials you want to use, push the button “use the same account for all SQL Server Services”. A dialog will appear- choose “NT Authority\Network Service” from the drop down and click “OK”. Please do not enter a password for this special account, it is automatically generated by Windows and hidden.
  14. Ensure the Database Engine is set to SQL_Latin1_General_CP1_CI-AS (Default US Collation) and click Next.
  15. On the Account Provisioning Tab, select Mixed Mode (SQL Server authentication and Windows authentication, enter a password for the SQL system administrator account, click Add Current User, and click Next. (NOTE: YOU CAN ALSO MODIFY THE DATA DIRECTORIES, IF DESIRED.)
  16. The Error Reporting page will appear. Click Next.
  17. The Installation Configuration Rules page will appear. Ensure the Installation Configuration rules all report either “Passed” or “Not applicable” and click Next.
  18. The Ready to install page will appear. Click Install.
  19. Wait for SQL Server to install and then close Setup.

 

Notes

32-bit and Express versions of MSSQL are not supported.
