Error 118 (During Case Backup / Restore)
Symptom: Case backup / restore fails with the following error message:
Failed: Please see the documentation for possible solutions. (118)
Cause: Usually occurs when FTK fails to copy all or part of the case folder file structure for some reason during backup or restore). Here are a few examples of common situations under which the error may occur:
- During backup FTK is attempting to create file and folder paths that exceed the Windows file path limitation of 260 characters.
- When restoring a case that contains files or folders with paths that exceed the Windows file path limitation of 260 characters.
- Insufficient permissions to write to new case folder destination during case restore.
- The error will also occur if the case restore could not delete an existing case folder to replace with the one being restored.
Here are the known solutions to this issue:
- When backing up cases created in FTK 3.0.x or previous, it may be necessary to manually cut (move) files with very long file paths. Commonly files in the registry_viewer folder will have the longest paths. By removing these files from the case folder before performing the backup, the restore should be able to complete successfully.
- FTK 3.1.1 includes a fix that will allow cases with paths to files or folders with paths that when restored will exceed the Windows file path limitation using a local path (i.e. C:\FTK Case Folder...). However when restoring a case with long file paths to a UNC ( \\servername\sharename\ ) it will still fail. This issue will be fixed in a future release of FTK.
- Verify that the database service user account and the user account under which FTK is running have permission on the case folder share. Once effective permissions have been verified, try using the Backup dialog browse function to browse to the case folder destination path. Enter the necessary credentials if prompted. This will allow FTK to temporarily cache the credentials needed in order to perform the restore.
- Ensure that the destination folder is renamed, deleted, or that the user account under which FTK is running has full permissions over the folder to which the case is being restored.
